3 Quick Tips to Being Present During the Festive Season

"Your true home is in the here and the now.”

- Thich Nhat Hanh -

There's something magical about presents. Whether it's wrapped in exquisite paper complete with colour coordinated ribbon, or tightly wrapped in newspaper, like the cooked cray my neighbour recently gave me, presents have the power to make you feel special.

There is also something magical about presence. I believe that presence is the greatest present you can give someone. Presence is about being present. The origin of the word 'presence' dates from the mid 14c., and is the "fact of being present, state of being in a certain place and not some other". At its core, presence is awareness. Who you are with. Where you are. What you are doing. Why you are doing it. For me, it's about being self-aware.

During times of festivities and celebrations you may find yourself being challenged to stay in the present moment as you work really hard to avoid being triggered. Here are three of my favourite tips to staying in the moment and connected with your awesomeness.

My Three Top Tips to Staying Present

#1. An Attitude of Gratitude

Start your day with an attitude of gratitude. It's so easy to overlook the little things that go together to create your world. I love acknowledging the fact I'm alive when I wake up, knowing there are people in the world that won't be experiencing that today. An attitude of gratitude reinforces joy and positivity in your daily life because it focuses light on what is resonating with you.

#2. Check-in With Yourself Before You Check in with the World.

Do you reach for your phone and check your emails, check the news or your social media feeds before checking in and connecting with yourself? Every time you check into the digital world, you check out of your world. When you wake up, spend some time to truly be with yourself, even if it's a couple of minutes, before you engage with the rest of the world. Remember you are the most important person in your life.

#3. Get Some Perspective.

Perspective impacts how you see things. My passport says I'm 159cm tall. When I think of my 2-month-old granddaughter, I feel tall. When I think of my 188cm son, I feel small. Both of these perspectives do not change the importance of, nor diminish my awesomeness as the unique individual that I am. They simply help to remind me that I am a part of a greater whole.

This festive time of year is all about connecting, and that starts with you. Being 100% connected with yourself allows you access to a better understanding of yourself which opens up the space for you to experience your uniqueness. Do you feel 100% connected with yourself?
